Concrete Heaven

Ok - not the prettiest of pictures, but to me- its a little slice of heaven.  A beautiful foundation, our new beautiful foundation.  It has to be back filled and then on to the next challenge, a new septic system.

This won't help construction.

Well, the blizzard of 2010 hit the Northeast last night and dumped 20 inches of snow in Massachusetts. The Cape got less snow, more rain. Either way, this won't help the time schedule. This brings me to the first lesson learned. Building a home requires patience :)

Mr. Fahey is moving right along.

Excavation is underway. The footings are in and the foundation is poured. Have I mentioned that I love my builder, Joe Fahey?  He renovated our home in Lexington, and we knew he was the right man for the job.  I know, it is still early, but I feel quite optimistic that it will be a great experience. Keep your fingers crossed.

The taking it down part :)

After meetings with our architect and months of town permit hearings, the day arrived to take down the old house.  Of course it was exciting to begin, but I couldn't help thinking about the family who summered here for years and years. The house was kept in the same family since it was built in 1927.  It was pouring rain on take down day, and we took the kids out of school to watch the demolition. The excavator let the boys work the machine, which was a huge hit.  Even my husband  took a turn!   I hope that some day, they will look back at that day and remember how it all began.

Where it all began.....

So, 17 years ago when I met my husband Joe, he took me to Cape Cod.  He grew up vacationing at  his grandmother's cottage.  Eventually his parents purchased the cottage and many family memories were made there. As we were crossing the bridge, on my first visit,  I knew I would love it.  I have always been a beach person, but there is something so special about the Cape. We are now building our own  cottage with hopes that it will be shared and enjoyed by our children for generations to come. I have attached a "before"  picture of the house.   I personally loved the charm of the old house, but it was in such poor condition, it made more sense to take it down and start over.
